What Does CS2 Stand For?

CS2 is probably one of the most popular first-person shooters out there, with millions of players from around the world. Yet, most of them don’t even know what CS2 means. If you are interested in learning more about that, you are in the right place. Here’s a complete explanation of what CS2 stands for.

What is CS2?

CS2 is short for Counte-Strike 2. As is with all titles in the series, the first term, Counte-Strike, has always been the same, and it has always been referred to as CS for short. This name was first coined in the 1990s when two gamers, Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe, developed a mod for Half-Life named Counter-Strike.

The literal meaning of the term Counter-Strike is a return strike, which includes countermeasures in response to the initial incoming strike from an opposing force. For example, let’s say a group of rebels decide to attack a building. An anti-terrorism force of the country the incident took place in initiates a response strike. We would call that response strike a Counter-Strike.

Considering the gameplay of CS2, the term Counter-Strike seems quite fitting as its title. The game has two teams, with one being the Terrorists and the second being the Counter-Terrorists. The Terrorists must initiate a strike and try to plant a bomb, and the Counter-Terrorists must initiate a Counter-Strike in response. The number “2” indicates that this is the latest title in the Counter-Strike series and runs on the newest Source 2 engine.

CS2 stands for Counter-Strike 2, which is the latest title in the Counter-Strike series. This name was first coined in the 90s when Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe developed the first-ever version of Counter-Strike. The number “2” at the end indicates that this title is running on Valve’s newest Source 2 engine.
